Get Social with Whatcom Environmental Council!
WEC hosted its latest "Get Social" event on
February 25th 2026 at Brandywine Kitchen in
Bellingham. Forty attendees enjoyed
networking time while snacking on a variety of
delicious finger food from Brandywine's menu,
provided by WEC.
Midway through, WEC Board member Rick Eggerth updated the audience on two projects we are currently engaged with: an appeal before the Hearing Examiner on Alta Gas impacts on Cherry Point wildlife and fisheries, and a legal appeal to the Growth Management Hearings Board of Bellingham's Comprehensive Plan, particularly regarding protection of Lake Whatcom, encouraging affordable housing, and preventing sprawl.
Following Rick's talk, Kirsten McDade, the North Sound Waterkeeper, gave an update and call to action regarding the sewage sludge incinerators at Post Point Waste Water Treatment Plant in Bellingham. Instead of pursuing least cost and less polluting options, the City plans to spend $60 Million in just the next few years to patch up 50+ year old equipment that currently pollutes the air we all breathe.
WEC supports RE Sources for Sustainable Communities in a petition drive titled "If We Burn It, We Breathe It!" The drive is collecting citizen and business owner signatures to push the City to 1) stop incinerating our sludge within one year, 2) temporarily haul our toxic sludge to a landfill, and 3) immediately begin a transparent process to change to a cheaper, far less polluting alternative technology. The City estimates a minimum of 10-15 years to eliminate incineration in our community - we do not accept that delay when it means our families will be breathing toxic pollution until then. Contact Seth Mangold at RE Sources to help with the petition drive, and other related actions the citizens group is taking. Sethm@re-sources.org 360-733-8307 https://www.re-sources.org/

Samish Crest Forum
On May 13th 2025 WEC held a public forum to explore the pending planning decisions that Whatcom County and the City of Bellingham will make soon, and how those decisions might impact water quality in Lake Padden, the Samish Crest Greenway, and local wildlife. About 80 people attended the forum, and the presentations and a video of the forum can be found at these links:
